Expedition from Iguassu Falls to Pantanal

This expedition is an experience of a lifetime and is unique to capture the incredible moments of nature in its entire splendor; it is a paradise for photographers and a unique experience at the Pantanal.

We will visit two biosphere reserves in two of the most outstanding and extraordinary ecosystems in South America: The Paranaense Jungle and the Pantanal, in addition to crossing other regions such as the Cerrado and the Chaco.

Prepare to spot and photograph the wildest nature in South America: crocodiles trying to blend in with their environment, iguanas, howler monkeys, giant river otters, anacondas, toucans and Jabirúes posing in the branches of trees, capybaras enjoying the sun, bears Anthills carrying their young and the largest number of blue macaws (araras) in the entire planet and hundreds of birds species.

What to wear and personal belongs: 

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Hat and/or cap; simple clothing and footwear, appropriate for hiking and for the jungle too.
  • Swimwear
  • Photo equipment (do not forget additional memories) and binoculars.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate or exemption if apply. 
  • Note: Remember that the type of trip requires being comfortable, without too much to carry, avoid white and very bright colors.

DAY 1

IGUAZU FALLS or ASUNCION CITY - Mbaracayú Natural Reserve
 Departures from: Puerto Iguassu City or Foz do Iguassu (or Asunción) in a private vehicle touring part of the Paraguayan savanna, on the way we will visit some typical towns of the Paraguayan inside territories, making one stop for lunch at a traditional Paraguayan food place.
The Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve preserves the pristine rainforest and is the core of a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
There live 220 families of the “Ache” native ethnic group, the only indigenous community considered an ancestral town of the Mbaracayú Forest. The right to hunt animals with traditional weapons has been recognized.
Overnight.
Driving distance: 370 km. about 5.30 hr.

DAY 2

Mbaracayú Nature Reserve – Pantanal 
 We will continue crossing part of the Paraguayan wild interior, and see some typical towns, having lunch on the way. After crossing, the Paraguayan-Brazilian borderline will arrive at the Fazenda for overnight.
Usually meals at the fazendas are included.
(Accommodation, meals as well as alcoholic beverage are not included in the price)

DAY 3

Activities in the Fazenda 
 Enjoy the wonderful breathtaking sunrises and sunsets at the Pantanal.
Nature will absorb you with magical aromas, sightings of wild animals in their natural environment.
Overnight.

DAY 4

Activities in the Fazenda 
Imagine being surrounded by birds and small mammals, while enjoying a full breakfast, just magic!
Prepare to see and take photographs of the typical birds and mammals of the area, trying to see the blue macaw, the anteater and the deer of the swamps among others.
Time on your own to rest and enjoy the pool.

DAY 5

Pantanal - Inner Pantanal Trail 
Departing from the fazenda (ranch) to venture into a trail opened at the end of the 19th century in the heart of the Pantanal, in which birds, mammals and reptiles can be easily seen on the sides of the road.
Arrival time for lunch in a hotel (not included), on the banks of a river in the region and the opportunity to know the environment of the waters of the Pantanal.
Again will take advantage of our stay to enjoy nature, navigate the river and take incredible pictures. Early in the morning and at night times, is when the animals are generally most active, hopefully to see the elusive jaguar.
At the end of the afternoon, the magic of the sunset over the river is unforgettable, while huge flocks of birds of different colors and sizes cross the sky.
Dinner and accommodation at the hotel (not included)
Driving distance: 250 km. about 4 hr.

DAY 6

South Pantanal – Bonito City 
We will follow along the "Pantaneiro path" where each bridge is a natural wildlife observatory.
Lunch will take place in a picturesque warehouse-restaurant at a crossroads usually meeting point for locals. After crossing the impressive Paraguay River on a raft, we will continue through the mountainous landscape of Matto Grosso.
In the afternoon, driving a short distance that separates us from BONITO city.
Bonito city offers a wide offer of accommodation, we will suggest you a hotel surrounded by park and nature, after check in, we will leave for touring around the town.
Overnight.
Driving distance: 470 km.

DAY 7

Bonito City - Buraco das Araras – Concepción City 
By the morning will visit the “Buraco das Araras” (well of the macaws), a curious geological formation, where usually as many Red Macaws nest as you have never imagined; we always are looking for the toucan.
Returning to Paraguay, will serve a picnic on the way. In the afternoon, will arrive in Concepción City, a charming small town in the Paraguayan countryside.
Observe the interaction of the locals with the immense Paraguay River, 800 km south of our previous crossing.

Driving distance: 400 km. about 8 hr.

DAY 8

Concepción – Asunción City 
After breakfast, we will cross the wild Chaco to reach Asunción in the afternoon.
Driving distance: 400 km. About 6 hs.

From Asunción City or Puerto Iguassu City, we can travel by land between them or flight back home with a connection in Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro.

All the detailed excursions with the entrance fees to “Buraco das Araras” and the excursions in the Fazenda (in the morning and in the afternoon during the entire stay, including navigation).

Suggested options:
 Fazenda (ranch) in Pantanal
 We recommend spending three nights in an authentic active rural establishment (Fazenda) in the Pantanal, completely surrounded by exuberant wildlife.
 The rooms are comfortable and rustic in style, breakfast; lunch and dinner are delicious, served buffet style with a wide variety.

Mbaracayú Lodge:
 This lodge is part of a social program, a sustainable tourism program; all services are provided by hotel students from a local ethnic group.
 The nature of the place is wild. It is possible to see and hear the particular song of the bellbird.

Pousada Pantaneira:
 An Inn on the banks of the Miranda River, it was built in wood on stilts to adapt perfectly to the rising water.
 Enjoy the experience of being immersed in an incredible and unforgettable landscape and in direct contact with wildlife, next to the Miranda River.

Optional extension to the Iguassu Falls

Day 1: Asuncion City to the Iguassu Falls

On the way to Puerto Iguassu City, we will enter the roads of the region, it will seem like a trip back in time to Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even that the scenery and climate were very different from their original countries, families quickly became colonist farmers from their own family farm, replicating the customs of their homeland that new generations preserve until today. Overnight in Puerto Iguassu City or Foz do Iguassu. 


Day 2: PUERTO IGUASSU CITY

During this day, you will admire the Iguassu Falls from the Argentine side, the one that takes the longest because the high numbers of small falls and two levels walking trails. Free time for a break, and amaze yourself with this incredible world’s wonder. Overnight 


Day 3: PUERTO IGUAZU CITY

After breakfast, transfer to the Brazilian side of the waterfalls to admire the beauty of the entire landscape. The rainforest provides the ideal setting for torrents of water to crash, like a tremendous thunder over the rocks below. From the Brazilian side, you will enjoy a different view of the falls during a walking tour through the passages that connect the different observation points for a panoramic view of the entire falls, framed by a myriad of rainbows. Overnight.


DAY 4: PUERTO IGUASSU CITY

Transfer to the airport in Argentina or Brazil, depending your next destination.
