Expedition in the Argentine and Chile Andes

Five-day road trip from Humahuaca gorge to the Atacama Desert, across the High Andes Plateau.
Note: This trip can start in Salta airport (Argentina) or in Calama airport (Chile)
 Approximate driving distance: 1.300 km.

5 day/6 nights | Argentina/Chile

At a glance

An emblematic gorge and an oasis in the world’s driest desert, connected through the Andean highlands (la Puna), is the aim of this guided road trip.

At one extreme, the “Quebrada de Humahuaca” (Argentina) was, since the first humans arrived in the region 10,000 years ago, the only mountain pass crossed the Andes northward.

In the Altiplano, the landscape is extraterrestrial, surrounded by bare mountains of ochre color, virtually uninhabited, although from time to time you can see some wild animals that endure the extreme conditions of this desert at more than 4000 meters above sea level.

At the other end, in the almost unimaginable landscape of the Atacama Desert, San Pedro villa is an oasis surrounded by lagoons, salt flats and volcanoes.

This whole area has witnessed dramatic events related to the primitive inhabitants, the Incas, the Spaniards and the wars of independence.

Places and attractions to visit:

  • The Quebrada de Humahuaca,
  • Mountain of the 7 colors,
  • Mountain of 14 colors
  • La Puna, Andean plain plateau above 4,000 meters above sea level,
  • The Atacama Desert,
  • Tatio geiseres
  • Towns of Purmamarca and San Pedro de Atacama.

A sample of experiences to feel and see

  • Cross high mountain passes, salt deserts, volcanoes, ancient cultures, history and traditions, and a great gastronomy to remember.
  • Share caring for the goats, dyeing the wool and making cheese with a local family.
  • Admire breathtaking mountain landscapes and charming villages.
  • The Quebrada de Humahuaca is relevant for the landscape but also for its historical significance.
  • Enjoy local foods, traditions and cultures.
  • The oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, in the middle of the driest desert in the world, is an unprecedented experience.
  • In the high Andean plateau, the landscape, increasingly barren and empty, will become much more beautiful and at the same time gloomier.
  • Experience solitude in the middle of a high-altitude desert mountain landscape.
  • At dawn at 4,300 m above sea level, watch as dozens of geysers of boiling water and steam erupt.dramatically, from the ground in contrast to the towering peaks.
  • The valley with conformation similar to the lunar surface is really a sensation of being in another world.
  • A wonderful and unique paradise for photography lovers.

When to Go

This trip can be done all year round, although it is advisable to avoid the winter months in the Southern Hemisphere (June-September) when the international passage sometimes could be closed.

What to wear and personal belongs:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Hat and/or cap; simple clothing and footwear, appropriate for hiking.
  • Photo equipment (do not forget additional memories) and binoculars.
  • Very warm clothes form some excursion.
  • Note: Remember that the type of trip requires being comfortable, without too much to carry.

Altitude sickness

A minority of visitors may temporarily suffer from altitude sickness. Symptoms vary; the most common are mild headaches, mild nausea, and shortness of breath. You need to take things with you, as you had been a few days in Purmamarca or San Pedro you should be acclimatized, however, you could resist the temptation to jump out of the vehicle every 5 minutes to take photos. The conventional advice is to avoid drinking alcohol and eat in moderation above 3,000m. Unfortunately, the meals on this trip are too good.
